Following successful treatment of a malocclusion, the teeth need to be held in their new position both to stabilize for a period of time as well as to resist Mother Nature’s tendency to return the teeth to previous positions.
Current thinking and research suggests that retainers be worn full time for a brief period of time followed by partial evening or day wear indefinitely.
During this period, third molars will be evaluated for eruption and need for removal. Although research has not proven that third molars cause crowding, their removal is suggested to enhance retainer wear, and prevent infections and future emergencies.
